About Gum Disease in San Diego, CA

Struggling with Gum Disease?
We Can Help!

Our experienced team is well-equipped to help you control gum disease.

Do I Have Gum Disease?

Could I Have Gum Disease?

Did you know that you could have the beginning stages of gum disease and not even realize it? Gum disease affects millions of people every year, and many of them are unaware that they have an issue. Seeking early treatment is recommended to ensure the health of your gums and overall health. Dr. Susan Hong offers a variety of treatment options to help renew your smile.

Scaling and Root Planing Gives You an Advantage Over Gum Disease

Gum disease may be progressive, but you can treat it using dental technologies and procedures including scaling and root planing. During this technique, we will gently clean the root surfaces of plaque, tartar and bacteria in areas where periodontal pockets have formed. This will allow the gum tissues to heal and reattach to adjacent tooth surfaces. Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure designed to treat the periodontitis stage of gum disease.

Scaling & Root Planing in Rancho Bernardo, CA

In most cases, you will not need to repeat the scaling and root planing procedure if you continue to follow your treatment schedule with Dr. Hong.

Could You Be at Higher Than Average Risk of Gum Disease?

Gum disease can happen to anyone, but there are a few risk factors that increase your chances of developing this problem:

  • You are a smoker.
  • You have hormonal imbalances.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You have an illness that affects your immune system or soft tissue in your mouth.
  • You're taking medications that affect how much saliva is produced.
  • You're not brushing and flossing twice daily.
  • Your family has a history of gum disease.

Gum Disease Stages:

Gingivitis Example
Periodontitis Example
Advanced Periodontitis example

Stage One: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and immediate treatment may provide a complete cure. During this stage, the gums become inflamed because of bacteria harbored between the teeth and gum “pockets.” Some people have very few symptoms, while others may notice that their gums are red and tend to bleed easily.

Stage Two: Periodontitis

At this point, the gum disease has begun to spread and break down healthy gum tissues, as well as teeth and bones. If you have periodontitis, you will likely notice that you have reoccurring bad breath, your gums bleed on a regular basis, your gums ache or hurt, and/or you notice the gums starting to recede from the teeth. Proper maintenance at our dental office and at home can help prevent it from progressing further.

Stage Three: Advanced Periodontitis

When gum disease reaches this stage, you are at risk of losing teeth and bone density, as well as gum tissues. One sign of advanced periodontitis is loose teeth, or teeth that have begun to noticeably shift.

Any potential issues that could mean gum disease need to be checked immediately. Call DentistRB at 858-247-3020 for an appointment with Dr. Hong.
